EV becoming the norm more quickly than expected
In March, Tesla achieved record figures in China. Do EVs – electric vehicles – benefit from the situation? ‘Studies clearly show that EVs produce lower emissions than their fuel counterparts,’ says Jan Verbruggen, managing partner of CenEnergy, ‘even in countries that generate all their electricity from coal or oil.’
‘So, EVs quickly have a big impact on the environment. This realisation is really beginning to sink in. If the entire fleet were electric, this would result in a 55% CO2 saving for the whole of the EU(*). EVs are becoming the norm for company fleets more quickly than expected. And not just because of the energy savings.’
Transition plan
The move to electrification presents employers and employees with some challenges. How many charging points and how much power capacity will you need to provide? How do you ensure optimal use of the charging stations? Can charging at home be combined with charging at work? And how do you reimburse the energy cost to the employee?
‘As a company, you have to draw up a transition plan,’ Jan advises. ‘Map all the financial and operational implications: from car policy to infrastructure investments and management tools. You want to make sure that users of charging points make way for colleagues after a couple of hours. Or you want to pay part of your employees’ electricity bill through split billing.’
