Turning the tide: Your roadmap to an electric company fleet

The coronavirus pandemic has made the human impact on the environment painfully obvious. For the electric car, this may well be good news. But how do you prepare your company for an accelerated transition to a low CO2 emission fleet? Jan Verbruggen has a roadmap for you, ready to put into action.

The more severe the effects of the coronavirus on the global economy, the more strongly nature is bouncing back. All across Europe, there has been a dramatic drop in nitrogen and CO2 emissions. Satellite images show hugely improved air quality. In Venice, fish are once again swimming in clear water. This virus is making us face up to some hard truths.

EV becoming the norm more quickly than expected

In March, Tesla achieved record figures in China. Do EVs – electric vehicles – benefit from the situation? ‘Studies clearly show that EVs produce lower emissions than their fuel counterparts,’ says Jan Verbruggen, managing partner of CenEnergy, ‘even in countries that generate all their electricity from coal or oil.’

‘So, EVs quickly have a big impact on the environment. This realisation is really beginning to sink in. If the entire fleet were electric, this would result in a 55% CO2 saving for the whole of the EU(*). EVs are becoming the norm for company fleets more quickly than expected. And not just because of the energy savings.’

Transition plan

The move to electrification presents employers and employees with some challenges. How many charging points and how much power capacity will you need to provide? How do you ensure optimal use of the charging stations? Can charging at home be combined with charging at work? And how do you reimburse the energy cost to the employee?

‘As a company, you have to draw up a transition plan,’ Jan advises. ‘Map all the financial and operational implications: from car policy to infrastructure investments and management tools. You want to make sure that users of charging points make way for colleagues after a couple of hours. Or you want to pay part of your employees’ electricity bill through split billing.’

‘CenEnergy can assist you with all these challenges. We build charging stations. And yet, we are primarily a service company,’ says Jan. ‘Our business model centres on providing a total, hassle-free solution to the employer and employee. Our software platform is essential. It’s the reason why we joined Gumption Group: here, we have access to all the necessary competencies to further develop this platform. With a vision for the future. For instance, our charging points are capable of a two-way energy transfer. This means that your powerful car battery can also supply electricity to your home.’

Social distancing

Before every home installation, a technical audit is carried out. Is this possible during social distancing? ‘Audits are done via smartphone and video. An installation consultant guides you through the audit remotely. It’s very easy to make an appointment, even in the evening or on Saturdays. Safe and efficient!’ Jan concludes.
