Gumption’s permanent employees in the Benelux are receiving new laptops. Through the initiative, the companies of the Gumption group want to help make working from home more convenient and make sure that consultants are properly equipped. Rank 1 is preparing and distributing the laptops.

'The idea started during the pandemic,’ explains Gumption’s Nicolas Van Odijk. ‘Events like Sinterklaas and the Christmas party had to be called off, so we decided to think about other gestures for the team. Since working from home was both popular and essential, we decided to invest in new laptops and asked Rank 1 to help us put the plan into action.’

Better equipped and better protected

‘We went looking for the ideal model,’ explains Raf De Backer of Rank 1. ‘It had to be a device that could support people in their work and provide added value both at home and on the move. In the end, we opted for Lenovo and were able to get a great deal.’ Consultants who are more mobile can opt for a laptop with a 14-inch touchscreen, while power users have the choice of a 15-inch screen.

Although the project was a major challenge from an IT perspective, Raf De Backer explains that the approach has a number of benefits. ‘The standardisation of everyone having the same type of laptop will make it much easier to manage everything. It’s also more secure and will better protect the company against things like cyber attacks.’

Shortage of microchips

One unexpected problem that occurred during the pandemic was a shortage of microchips on the market, which put the supply of laptops at risk. ‘We had to negotiate hard to make sure that we got the last laptops available,’ explains Raf De Backer. ‘They were originally supposed to be a gift for the Sinterklaas celebrations, but the shortage meant that they were delayed. There are now waits of up to eleven months for laptops like these, so we got in just in time.’

Seamless start-up and correct configuration

The idea is for people to exchange their old laptops for the new ones. ‘We make sure that all the applications that people will need are ready, that printers have been configured, and that they can start using their new laptop without experiencing any problems,’ promises Raf De Backer. ‘We also make sure that laptops are properly wiped so that we’re compliant with the GDPR.’

Exchanging an old laptop for a new one takes around fifteen minutes. Yannick De Plukker of Rank 1 is responsible for seeing that this extensive project passes off smoothly.

Three-year lease contracts

The old laptops are offered on the refurbished market in view of the ecological aspect, or can be bought according to their residual value. ‘There’s no obligation to switch to a new laptop, but we’ve seen pretty much everyone take up the offer with great enthusiasm,’ explains Raf De Backer.

The new laptops are provided on a lease basis and will be replaced every three years. The lease concept means that people will always have the most efficient and most up-to-date system there is, which for a technology company is not something of an unnecessary luxury. ‘The costs are predictable, you stay up to date with the latest technology and you do it in the most financially responsible way possible,’ concludes De Backer. ‘Whether or not desktop-as-a-service is something you should consider depends on your business. Companies who are interested in looking into it can always get in touch.’
